REGISTRATION FOR TJC EDUCATION STUDENTS
The Education
Department prefers that our majors avoid the long lines at advising and
registration each semester. As you know, you
cannot register until you have been cleared for registration. We
encourage our majors avoid the rush, expense, and confusion of late
registration.
However, YOU are responsible for taking
charge of your college career. The advisors & faculty are here to help but ultimately you
are responsible for knowing what your degree plan requirements are and for
making sure that you are enrolling in the correct courses. The degree plans are
very specific and are published on the main page of this site. Know which one is
yours and be familiar with the requirements.
Check the list below to find which category applies to you
and what you should do.
|
Do you
have questions about your degree plan, are not sure what to
take, or need advising? |
See Silvana, Carrie or Liane in
the University Studies advisors office in Jenkins Hall. No
other advisors are qualified to help education majors. Don't wait until
the last minute! |
|
Are you a brand new TJC student who has never seen an advisor? |
See Silvana, Carrie or Liane in
the University Studies advisors office in Jenkins Hall. No
other advisors are qualified to help education majors. Don't wait until
the last minute! |
|
Are you a TJC student but have not yet been flagged as an education
major in our computer system? |
See Silvana, Carrie or Liane in
the University Studies advisors office in Jenkins Hall. No
other advisors are qualified to help education majors. Don't wait until
the last minute!(We cannot clear you unless you are flagged as an
education major.) |
|
Are you a VCT student? |
You must see the appropriate person at your college unless you intend to
register through TJC. If the latter, the "Student Services" link off the
main page of this site can walk you through the process. |
| Did you miss early
registration and will have to register during late registration in
Rogers Student Center? |
We urge you in the strongest
possible terms to register early. Many education classes fill prior to late
registration. Too, there are many faculty members helping with late registration
who know nothing about the education degree requirements. If you had no
choice, insist on talking to Silvana, Carrie, Liane, or Amy Glenn if they are
at registration. If not, see Silvana, Carrie, or Liane as soon as possible after
registration to make sure you have the correct courses. |

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2005-2006 OUTSTANDING EDUCATION MAJOR - CHAD ATCHLEY!
TRIO SUMMER BOOK LOANS
The TRiO program offers book
loans (from books on hand) to any student who has exhausted his/her financial
aid resources beginning the first class day of the Summer I & Summer II terms .
The student must come to the TRiO office (RSC -3rd floor) and present a copy of
his/her schedule. If TRIO has the book they will loan it to the student for the
duration of the term and place a hold on that account.
Books are loaned on a first come, first served
basis. At the end of the term, the book must be returned and the hold
will be lifted.

EFSI
$50K Giveaway Scholarship Sweepstakes
To help
students pay for their first year of college, EFSI proudly
announces the launch of its new $50K Giveaway Scholarship
Sweepstakes. The program will
award 10 scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each to first year
students attending an accredited college or trade school in the
fall of 2006. The $50K Giveaway is free to enter and
there is no essay requirement. Eligibility is not based on GPA,
area of study, or financial need. Students can enter online at
www.50kgiveaway.org/efsi/.
Entries for the $50K Giveaway
will be accepted until July 31, 2006 and winners will
be chosen on or about August 5th. Scholarship prizes will be
sent directly to the school of attendance for credit to the
students account. For more information, visit the EFSI Web site
at
www.efsi.net or call 1-800-753-1437.
Sallie Mae Fund Scholarships
The Sallie Mae Fund will award
more than $2.3 million in college scholarships to approximately 1,000
under-served students who are attending college this year. Complete
guidelines and applications for these scholarships are now available
online at
www.salliemaefund.org. Scholarship programs include: "Writers of
Passage" Scholarship, American Dream Scholarship, First in My Family
Scholarship, Unmet Need Scholarship, and The Sallie Mae 911 Education
Fund. Deadlines
vary for each program.
WRITING LAB
Writing comprises a large part of the requirements in our courses.
Because we want you to do well, we
recommend that you take advantage of the writing
lab in Jenkins Hall. The lab staff have been kind enough to offer online
services for those of you in online education classes. If you are interested,
please contact them at
writinglab@tjc.edu.
If you are in a traditional class, your education classroom is just a couple of
doors down the hall from the writing lab (Jenkins 1108). Take that assignment you're working on
and stop in at the lab.
Get help
from the superb lab specialists with your writing assignments. They can help you
with spelling, grammar, structure ... anything that has to do with writing. Not
only will your assignments (and grades!) improve, in the process you'll learn
how to be the kind of writer you want YOUR students to become. As a teacher, you
need to model for your students the things you want them to learn. But first,
you have to learn it yourself! The Jenkins Hall Writing Lab is a great resource
and it's free. Take advantage of it!
Fall & Spring hours are Monday & Tuesday 10:00-3:00 and Wednesday & Thursday 10:00-6:00.
Summer hours are Monday & Wednesday 2:00-7:00 and Tuesday & Thursday 2:00-6:00.
MATH
TUTORING FOR DISTANCE STUDENTS
Tutoring for all Math classes is provided to distance students by the
professor of the class in which you are enrolled. All institutions of higher
education are required to offer to distance students services that are
comparable to those offered to on campus students. If you are not getting the
kind of tutoring help you need for a specific class, please ask your professor
for advice. The department takes its responsibility to
you very seriously so let us help!
ONLINE
NEWSLETTERS
There are
a number of free online newsletters with a focus on education. Smart Brief at
www.smartbrief.com/signup
allows you to sign up for a number of different newsletters - the best two
of which are published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)
Smart Brief and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Smart Brief.
eSchool News has free newsletters as well. You can sign up for those at
www.eschoolnews.com.
Educators Online Exchange at
www.childcareexchange.com
has a couple of free online newsletters. However, their focus tends to be very
early childhood, rather than K-12. Finally, you are welcome to check out the TJC
ACE newsletter which is posted at the beginning of each month for ACE interns
and alumni. We can't add you to the email list but the newsletter can be found at
