Performance Monitoring

TJC education majors are expected to maintain good attendance records and good grades in all classes. The department communicates closely with faculty in other departments (and other colleges) in order to monitor the performance of its majors. Majors are expected to demonstrate continuing progress throughout their time at TJC in writing skills, computer skills, critical thinking skills, multicultural communication, and professional behavior. We realize that not everyone is an A student in every subject. However, education majors are expected to demonstrate continued progress in all classes and to take responsibility for seeking help in those classes in which they are having trouble. One day you will expect this of your students. Today, we expect it of you.

 

Performance Monitoring Requirements

You are required twice in each semester to report your current grade and attendance in every class you're taking that semester. The following chart lists the forms and due dates. The list below the chart gives you directions for getting started. You may not submit forms more than two days before the due date. We want you to report on your grade status for that date, not two weeks prior. It is your responsibility to remember and meet the due dates!

1.  Go to the Internship page and complete step #1. Be careful that you meet the deadlines given on that page!

2. Go to the Portfolio page and complete the steps to acquiring and setting up your portfolio.

3.  If you are an education major enrolled at TJC, you are required to meet the Performance Monitoring requirements during every semester in which you are enrolled at TJC, whether or not you are taking an education course during that semester. This is a requirement of the AAT. If you are not a TJC major but have registered for this course through another college, you are required to meet the Performance Monitoring requirements during every semester in which you are taking a TJC education course.

4.  Prior to each due date, contact the professor of every class you are taking and request your current class average and the number of times you have been absent. If you have a professor who is less than cooperative in providing you with this information, please let your education professor know that. We will contact him/her and explain the importance of the information. What you should NOT do is submit a Performance Reporting Form that says, "I don't know this information because my math teacher wouldn't tell me."

5.  If one or more of your professors does not take roll, you must keep track of this yourself. (If you are in an online course where attendance is not applicable, you must say so.)

6.  Prior to each due date, go into your online portfolio and find the appropriate Performance Reporting Form. (See chart above.) The form will ask for the following information:

  • course and section
  • college/university at which course is being taken (this is required for each course since so many of you take courses at various colleges through VCT)
  • professor's name
  • current numerical class average (If class does not use 100-point scale, please note that. For example, 90 out of 200.)
  • current number of absences
  • Are you happy with your current performance?
  • What obstacles do you foresee in improving your performance?
  • What solutions to those obstacles do you plan on implementing?
  • What is your final goal in this class?
  • Have you dropped this class?
  • If so, why?
  • If so, how do you plan to be more successful in this class the next time you take it?

7.  The department runs random checks after all due dates in order to ensure accuracy. Be honest. We want to help, not yell at you!

8.  After each reporting date, the department contacts students who are at risk in any classes to determine a plan for improvement. While we expect all education majors to make good grades, we also provide support to help you improve. Tutoring and support are available to both on campus and distance students. You can find these resources on the "Current Majors" page under Announcements and on the "Student Services" page under Tutoring. If you are having trouble in one of your classes, you are expected to approach that class in a responsible and professional manner ... in other words, you are expected to get help!
